Edgar Allan Poe

What inspired this dark and brooding man to write such works as he did? Poe was born in 1809 and shortly thereafter his father abandoned him and his mother died. Poe was often poor, in ill health, and drank heavily. Though he was a prolific author he did not receive acclaim until "The Raven" was published in 1845. His last poems "The Bells" and "Annabel Lee" were published posthumously. He was found semiconscious in a Baltimore tavern and died on October 7, 1849. Every year on this date a mysterious visitor visits his grave site and leaves a bottle of alcohol. Nobody knows who this person is and no attempt has ever been made to find out what motivates this behavior.
