My Poetry

Yesterday

1997
This is a poem which took a long time to write. It was not so long in terms of the actual writing as it was in terms of the events leading up to my writing it. It means that caution is sometimes a dangerous thing. Indecision often leads to unfulfillment. Sometimes making a choice does not yield the best results, but while the choice may be mistaken it may be better than not choosing at all. There is a line from a "Rush" song that says "if you choose not to decide you still have made a choice." It is this indecision which I find myself regretting so often of late. The intended of this poem is one of those missed opportunities where I chose not to decide until it was too late. Maybe I can change this mode of thinking in the future.

To choose what one wants
Is only as clear
As to know what one has,
And what one holds dear.

To have is to hold
But, how can we know
(To hold is to keep)
When not to let go?

While choosing a path
Is-often precarious
Choosing not to decide
Is-seldom less serious.

For choosing to shirk
The ache of future blight
Does little to quell
The torment of hindsight.

For what the morrow holds
No matter what they say-
Is never quite as great
As it held yesterday.
