I wrote this one after a friend had cheered me up just by smiling. Well, it helped that I had a big crush on her too. This poem was published in my junior high school newspaper.
|
Sadness lurks and creeps in the hearts of all,
in darkness.
There are many roads that lead to this dark domain,
but there are few that leave the darkness.
A weary traveler makes his way down a deserted road
and finds himself in darkness, alone in darkness.
Alone except for memories that continually haunt him,
and force him farther into the darkness.
A discouraged traveler gives up and sits down,
in the land of despair.
Then, there is a glint of light,
small, but potent.
In this glint, the traveler sees the land that he is in,
and the path to leave by;
and then the glint fades into darkness.
With new hope the traveler sets off
in the direction of the path.
But, it is not long before the darkness sets in,
and the flame of hope is extinguished.
The traveler sees another glint of light,
and once more again the flame is rekindled,
and hope is restored.
It will take many glints of light,
and many periods of darkness,
before the traveler can find the right path.
And with each glint of light,
a new feeling of hope will come to the traveler.
And when the traveler has had enough glints,
and has been lost long enough,
then the traveler will find his path,
and will once again bathe in the light
of happiness and joy.
