My Poetry

Smile

1991
I wrote this poem in a few hours during my summer in the Governor's Honors Academy. The sonnet form of writing is one that appeals to me due to its structure and the fact that one must say what one wants in a definite number of lines.

When you are upset it makes me feel sad,
used to the sound of your bubbling cheer,
without your sweet voice it strikes me as queer
that you, my friend, could be feeling so bad.

When I was depressed you made me feel glad,
my spirits were lifted when you were near.
Now that you're saddened and void of your cheer,
I try to revive you, just as you had.

To you, my sad friend, this poem I write,
in hopes that my words can make you feel well.
If I've succeeded these little words will
cause you to feel better, cheerful, and bright.

Carry this poem with you every mile,
and when times are tough remember to smile.
