| I originally wrote this poem as a series of successively shrinking lines. I performed it in my high school theatre class autodrama (one person play) "Words of Expression". It was also published in the Charleston newspaper's "Flipside" regional high school newspaper. |

| Despair - | neither here nor there |
| the loss of Hope | |
| and the absence of prayer. |
| Despair - | to never win |
| or begin again | |
| or to have an ending that is fair. |
| Despair - | a feeling of gloom |
| for impending doom | |
| that hovers in the air. |
| Despair - | to have a heavy heart |
| that has broken apart | |
| and no longer seems to care. |
| Despair - | the comrade of Fate |
| that says it's too late | |
| and fills one's heart with fear. |
| Despair - | the feelings of sadness |
| that bring out the badness | |
| and crush out all feelings of cheer. |
| Hope - | a noble belief |
| that cancels out grief, | |
| to know how to cope; | |
| that, is Hope. |
